Insurance Career Decision

Should You Quit Insurance Sales or Change Your Process?

A data-driven 30-day framework for deciding whether to quit insurance sales, change agencies or repair your lead and sales process.

Reviewed and updated September 26, 2026. Written from Colton Sturgill's experience serving independent insurance agents for over 10 years and operating insurance lead generation and sales technology.

Do not confuse one broken layer with the entire career

The current agency, mentor, lead source, market or schedule may be wrong without insurance sales being wrong for you. The reverse can also be true: a strong organization cannot make the daily work fit everyone.

Identify the layer creating the most pain before making a permanent decision.

Give a corrected process thirty focused days

Use one market, manageable lead volume, a complete follow-up schedule, underwriting support and daily tracking. Stop adding new variables during the test.

This is not another empty instruction to never quit. It is a controlled period designed to produce evidence.

Define the decision criteria in advance

Choose the activity, financial and quality-of-life results that would justify continuing. Examples include contact rate improvement, placed business, sustainable acquisition cost, reduced anxiety and a schedule compatible with the household.

Also define the stop conditions. Do not move the goalposts because of one emotional day.

Leaving can be responsible; staying can be responsible

Returning to salaried work, changing agencies or leaving the field can protect a family and create space for a better fit. Continuing can also be rational when the corrected data shows a viable path.

The objective is ownership of the decision rather than surrendering to hype or shame.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I try insurance sales before quitting?

There is no universal timeframe. Before deciding, use a defined evaluation period with enough financial runway, consistent activity and complete tracking to understand the results.

Should I switch IMOs instead?

Only after identifying what the current organization cannot provide and confirming the alternative solves that specific problem rather than offering another recruiting promise.
