New Agent Business Plan

A Realistic 30-60-90 Day Plan for New Insurance Agents

A practical 30-60-90 day insurance sales plan built around leads, tracking, underwriting, appointments, placed business and measurable improvement.

Reviewed and updated September 26, 2026. Written from Colton Sturgill's experience serving independent insurance agents for over 10 years and operating insurance lead generation and sales technology.

Days 1-30: choose and establish

Choose one primary market, a manageable set of carriers, a sustainable lead source and a daily schedule. Configure the CRM and define every stage from new lead through issued-and-paid policy.

Establish baseline numbers without trying to look successful. Honest data is more useful than impressive activity.

Days 31-60: execute without constant reinvention

Work every opportunity through the complete contact plan. Track speed to first contact, attempts, contacts, appointments, shows, applications and underwriting outcomes.

Review cases and calls weekly. Improve one weak stage while keeping the rest of the process stable enough to measure.

Days 61-90: audit and optimize

Calculate cost per contact, appointment, application and issued-and-paid policy. Compare submitted premium with placed business and expected commission with actual commission.

Decide whether to scale, hold or reduce lead volume based on capacity and unit economics. Build the next quarter around what the evidence shows.

The plan is a learning system

Ninety days will not turn every new agent into a top producer. It should create a repeatable workflow, an honest financial picture and a clear understanding of the next skill to improve.

That is a stronger foundation than chasing a new vendor or organization every time the week becomes uncomfortable.

Frequently asked questions

What is a realistic goal for a new insurance agent's first 90 days?

Build a consistent opportunity flow, learn the target products, establish accurate tracking and produce enough data to understand contact, appointment, application and placement performance.

When should a new agent scale lead volume?

After several batches show acceptable economics and the agent can maintain prompt contact, follow-up and underwriting quality at the current volume.
