Insurance Sales Reset

What to Do When Insurance Sales Isn't What You Expected

A practical reset for new insurance agents facing disappointing income, chargebacks, poor support, lead confusion or first-year burnout.

Reviewed and updated September 26, 2026. Written from Colton Sturgill's experience serving independent insurance agents for over 10 years and operating insurance lead generation and sales technology.

Name the specific disappointment

Do not stop at saying the business is not working. Identify whether the disappointment is income, schedule, lead quality, lack of support, rejection, underwriting or the agency model itself.

A specific problem can be tested. A general feeling of failure usually creates random changes that make the operation even harder to understand.

Separate opportunity, organization and execution

Insurance sales may still fit you even if the current agency does not. The agency may be supportive even if your lead budget is unsustainable. The leads may be valid even if the follow-up process is inconsistent.

Score each layer independently: market, organization, mentor, lead source, schedule, sales process, underwriting and finances.

Run a thirty-day reset

Choose one product, one lead source and one complete follow-up plan. Record every contact attempt, appointment, show, application and outcome. Review cases before submission and stop increasing spend until the baseline is visible.

Thirty days will not answer every career question, but it can expose whether a few operational corrections materially change the results.

Decide from evidence, not embarrassment

There is no shame in changing agencies, returning to salaried work or leaving a career that no longer fits. There is also no reason to abandon a real opportunity because the first system you entered was incomplete.

Make the next decision from numbers, financial reality and the life you actually want.

Frequently asked questions

What if my agency is not giving me enough support?

Ask for specific help with cases, calls, schedules and numbers. If the support remains generic, seek qualified mentorship and build systems that let you diagnose your own pipeline.

Should I immediately switch lead vendors?

Not until you can explain what failed in the current process. Review volume, contact attempts, speed, outcomes and lead-quality issues separately.
